Art By Tina Berning
Am always attempting to make note of where and how discoveries are made, but ran into a bit of a stop in identifying how I was introduced to the work of Berlin-based artist and illustrator Tina Berning. That was until I came across this particular first photo of today's slideshow during research earlier in the week and remembered exactly where. I was immediately captured by this particular illustration of a woman by Berning when I first saw it featured on Delpozo's Instagram which was used to countdown the house's spring/summer 2017 runway show.
Since 2000, Berning's award-winning illustrations have been published worldwide and shown in many renowned anthologies including Illustration Now! and American Illustration. Her work has also been featured in publications such as The New York Times, Playboy (US and Germany), Vogue (Italy, Japan, Germany), Die Zeit, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Architectural Digest and many others, and has been shown across the globe regularly in solo exhibitions spanning from the United States of America to Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and Canada. Advertising campaign clients include Mercedes-Benz, Tiffany and Co., and Shiseido.

Tina Berning started her career designing album covers for the music industry. Her early passion for editorial illustration led her to an intensive contemplation on the human figure. Reflecting the female role in media is one of the core issues in her artistic work.
Her drawings typically feature women who are created subjectively and critically, and yet, there is tenderness and vulnerability to each character. Depth to femininity is manifested through the use of mixed materials and intentional colors. There is gracefulness to each character, and yet, strength. And if you have not noticed yet, they are never smiling.

A glimpse of her beloved studio & boxes on her desk. | "The lower left big box is not so good, the other one, not so bad. The upper long box is spare parts and the other 3 boxes are random postcard boxes spread over my desk, no categories, bits and pieces." | @tina_berning

Berning's work displays an obvious imperfection as seen through amorphous color streaks that run on like grammatically incorrect sentences and shadows that follow silhouettes.
Smudges, while often mistaken to be unintentional like misplaced lipstick and runny mascara, are purposeful to the form of Berning's work. Illustrations are usually depicted on found paper, scraps that are torn and age worn, further adding to imperfection.

Off Diary. #latergram 100 Girls On Cheap Paper Nr. 82, 2006.
Berning's publications 'No Nipples, No Guns, No Cigarettes' and '100 girls on cheap paper' are both centered on women. "Girls on cheap paper" is a collection of portraits of 100 distinctively striking women.
What originally began as an online project soon blossomed into its own book, and then a show and then a traveling show! Most of the girls from the original exhibition sold, so when it traveled to New York and Japan, Tina had to paint 80 new women for each show!

Berning's paintings, which often features lighter tones of watercolour and ink, is completely opposite of baroque style, with many details deemed unnecessary omitted to convey that meaning transpired by the viewer matters much more than craftsmanship and perfection.

Have personally always been drawn to women in art portrayed as elegant yet haunting. Perhaps it is the notion that, when stripped away from embellishments we depend on so much, the female figure as a whole will always be remarkably beautiful, even in its most naked form and the rawness of Berning's illustrations are a perfect example of just that…
